Stamp size suggestions

This seems like such a nice bunch of people. Before last week, I had
never heard of letterboxing, and now I feel I've landed in a bizarre
but fascinating new world! (BTW, I stumbled upon the website because
I was searching NPR for info. about Bonnie Jo Hunt, a Sioux opera
singer who was interviewed the same week as the letterboxing segment
was aired. If any of you nature-lovers want to hear something
amazing, listen to that interview & hear how she sang with the songs
of crickets. If you put in her name, it will come up.) ANYWAY, I
didn't hear any response to my question about sizes for stamps. Not
having seen many yet, I'd love to know the range of sizes before we
carve. Also, I imagine Hitchhikers to be generally smaller-- is that
correct? Rubythroat, the pretty one we found and still need to set
free, is around 1" x 3". --Lunaryakketyact

It's a tough question, actually. Hitchhikers should be smallish. Letterbox stamps are always grand and easier to detail when they're big, but to be considerate, one doesn't really know if the finders have a goodly-sized notebook on the trail. Diane and I started with a little one before we saw the size of some stamps. There are a few early stamps in our collection that are continued on another page, I'm afraid.

Still, the big ones truly can be impressive. I tend to stay not much larger than one or two inches by up to three inches. I also back the stamp, and I don't want the box to fill up too much. I like leavin room for hitchikers!

All in all, I'd say that the canvas depends on the picture.
